The more High Fidelity something gets, the clearer the message is, or at least the sense that information is given to us becomes stronger. Through this, less questions are asked and less space is created for conversation. When the message appears so clear, there is no need for participation. We are being spoken to, not spoken with. The work of the idea has already been done and we are not invited into the conversation to complete the thought. Low Fidelity offers a less clear transmission of information. Similar to a rough signal over the phone, the viewer must spend a bit more energy listening in to understand. It is not a message that can be passively consumed and requires a bit more effort to get the full message. There is no "in one ear, our the other" because there is some amount of effort required to get through the ear in the first place. Asking for a bit of effort from the viewer is not somethin exclusive to Low Fidelity, but it is something that is shied away from. It would seem counter intuitive to ask the viewer, the person you are selling to, to put in effort into the message you are selling. The longer it takes to tell them to buy your soda or vote for your party, the more opportunities they have to walk away. Especially now when it seems like attention spans are an all time low. It is however that investment that creates the lasting bond between the viewer and the message. That investment offers a real sense of connection and relation to the message. We already ask people to put in some level of effort into viewing a message, whether that is the length of time it takes to view a video, or to read through some amount of text. We often sprinkle in little jingly keys throughout our messages to keep the attention of the viewer so that we can communicate our full message. We don't really have our viewer's investment, we've just kept them preoccupied long enough to stick around. In one ear, our the other. Low Fidelity respects the viewer to take the time to work with the message, and if they choose not to, that is their choice. It takes a bit longer to pull the full message, maybe even just an extra moment or two, but that take spent creates a connection between viewer and message that would have otherwise just been wasted time.
